Grugapark – Garden Art and Open Pathways

The Grugapark is one of the most well-known and largest green spaces in Essen. Spanning around 70 hectares, it combines garden architecture, expansive lawns, and event venues into a versatile park landscape. Originally created for the Great Ruhr Horticultural Exhibition, the park has evolved over decades into an integral part of Essen’s cityscape.

From our hotel, you can reach the Grugapark in just a few minutes on foot. The proximity makes it easy to fit in a walk, a jog, or a visit between other appointments. Thanks to its location in southern Essen, the park, trade fair, and residential areas are well connected.

Themed Gardens, Events, and Leisure Activities

The Grugapark is divided into different garden areas. Themed gardens, a rosarium, perennial beds, and seasonal plantings shape its appearance. In spring, tulips and magnolias take center stage, while in summer, rose and perennial beds define the scenery. Even in the cooler months, the park remains an open, spacious place for activity and relaxation.

In addition to the garden landscape, events take place regularly. Concerts, markets, and seasonal festivals make use of the generous spaces, as do smaller cultural offerings. At the same time, the park offers retreats with quiet paths and shaded spots.

For families, playgrounds and animal enclosures are available, while sports and leisure areas enable various activities. Due to its location in close proximity to Messe Essen, the Grugapark is also frequently used as a counterbalance to conferences or events.

The combination of designed garden landscapes, open meadows, and event offerings makes the Grugapark a versatile destination in southern Essen. It connects nature experiences with urban infrastructure and is accessible year-round.
