The Ruhr region isn’t all the same

The Ruhr region isn’t all the same

We love the contrasts that Das Lola brings together: a former colliery site, right in the middle of the forest. Absolute peace and quiet, yet within walking distance of the trade fair. Located on the quiet Wiedfeldtstraße, when you look out the window you mainly see one thing: the forest. Das Lola is right by the Krupp Forest, on the border between the leafy residential area of Bredeney and the lively district of Rüttenscheid.

Step outside and turn left to enjoy relaxed jogging loops through the forest, or explore the historic Hügel Park and Lake Baldeney on foot. Turn right and you’ll reach Messe Essen in 15 minutes, along with a wide range of restaurants and bars and the outstanding Museum Folkwang.

Horse riding, cycling and canoeing are just as close at hand here as business and bars. We know the best places to wind down after a long workday. And we also know what Essen has to offer beyond “coal and comrades.” We’ve put together a selection of going-out and day-trip tips—Das Lola is the perfect starting point and place to come back to.

Messe Essen is just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Anyone exhibiting, organizing, or attending an event here appreciates the short distance just as much as the quiet, green setting. After an intense day at the trade fair, relaxation begins right outside our door.

Lake Baldeney

The route to Lake Baldeney starts within walking distance of the hotel. Walks by the water, jogging rounds in the greenery, or a stage on the Ruhr Cycle Route—here, nature and activity meet right on your doorstep. An ideal starting point for active days and relaxed evenings.

Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is one of the most impressive places in the Ruhr region. Take the 107 cultural tram line straight there from the hotel. A trip combining history, architecture and modern culture—and back to the greenery in the evening.

International masterpieces, world-class photography and changing exhibitions define Museum Folkwang. It’s easy to reach from our hotel—and ideal for anyone who wants to combine their stay in Essen with art and culture.

Villa Hügel

High above Lake Baldeney lies the former residence of the Krupp family. Villa Hügel and the expansive Hügel Park combine industrial history, architecture and landscape in a unique way. A place for long walks and fresh perspectives.

Wide lawns, themed gardens and mature trees shape Grugapark in Essen. Between flowerbeds, sculptures and walking paths, you can leave the city behind for a few hours. A place for activity, connection and quiet moments in the greenery.

When the first notes sound in the Philharmonie or the curtain rises at the Aalto Theatre, a special evening in Essen begins. Both venues stand for top-level music, opera and theatre. And afterwards, the way back to the greenery is pleasantly short.
