Baldeneysee & Ruhr Valley Cycle Path
Lake Baldeney is one of the most famous local recreation areas in Essen. Nestled between wooded hills and historic sites, it shapes the south of the city. Wide paths for walkers, runners, and cyclists run along the shore. Sailing boats and rowing clubs define the scenery, as do viewpoints overlooking the water.
You can also reach Lake Baldeney on foot from our hotel. The path leads through the Krupp Forest and connects quiet residential areas with open shore areas. The Ruhr Valley Cycle Path is also easily accessible from here, making the lake ideal for both a short stay and a stopover on a longer bike tour.

Leisure, nature, and cycling along the Ruhr
Lake Baldeney was created in the 1930s as a reservoir for the Ruhr and is now a central part of the leisure landscape in the Ruhr area. In addition to sailing, rowing, and stand-up paddling, walking paths and viewpoints characterize the shore. Cafés and small jetties are scattered around the lake, while Villa Hügel and the Hügelpark are located above.
The Ruhr Valley Cycle Path runs along the Ruhr from its source in the Sauerland to its mouth in Duisburg. At around 240 kilometers, it is one of the most famous long-distance cycle routes in North Rhine-Westphalia. The route leads through diverse landscapes, past industrial history, natural sections, and small towns. The section at Lake Baldeney is considered particularly attractive, as water, forest, and wide views meet here.
For cycle travelers, the good connection to local public transport along the route is an additional advantage. Train stations in Essen and the surrounding cities allow for flexible stage planning. At the same time, Lake Baldeney is also suitable for shorter tours or day trips.
The combination of lake, forest, and cycle path makes this part of Essen a versatile starting point for active days. Whether it’s a multi-day tour on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path or a relaxed walk by the water – Lake Baldeney combines a nature experience with infrastructure close to the city.
