Zollverein Coal Mine – industrial heritage up close
Zollverein Coal Mine is one of the Ruhr region’s best-known landmarks and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The former hard-coal mine in Essen now stands for industrial heritage, architecture, and cultural diversity. The expansive site in the north of Essen attracts visitors from Germany and abroad every year and is considered one of Europe’s most important industrial monuments.
From our hotel, you can easily reach the site via the Cultural Line 107. The tram connects several of the city’s cultural venues and runs directly towards Zollverein. This way, you can get from Essen’s green south to the historic industrial site in the north without detours.

UNESCO World Heritage Site, museums, and events
At the heart of the site is Shaft XII with its striking double headframe. The sober, functional architecture of the 1920s is considered an important example of New Objectivity and is often mentioned in the same breath as Bauhaus architecture. The clean lines, brick façades, and industrial design language still shape its appearance today.
Today, the former industrial buildings house several museums and cultural institutions. The Ruhr Museum is dedicated to the region’s natural, cultural, and industrial history. The Red Dot Design Museum showcases contemporary products and design concepts from around the world. In addition, special exhibitions, guided tours of the former coking plant, and themed walks around the site take place regularly.
The site is expansive and openly accessible. Old rail tracks, headframes, and industrial halls create a distinctive backdrop for events. In summer, parts of the grounds are used for open-air concerts and festivals; in winter, the coking plant is transformed into an ice rink. This makes Zollverein not only a monument to industrial history, but a vibrant cultural venue.
Zollverein Coal Mine is a prime example of the Ruhr region’s transformation—from a center of heavy industry to a region that brings history, design, and culture together.
